Hillcrest Commercial Core Historic District

As a part of the ongoing Hillcrest Plan Amendment process, the City of San Diego released a Draft Hillcrest LGBTQ+ Historic Context Statement, which provides information on the people, events and places important to Hillcrest's LGBTQ+ history and highlights some associated historical resources. The City continues to seek comments and additional information from the public regarding this important document. Learn more in SOHO's eNews.

SOHO is encouraged that this preservation planning is in process. However, consultants are simultaneously reviewing the historic district boundaries and resources identified within the 2016 Uptown Community Plan Update and SOHO remains concerned for the preservation plans for these important LGBTQ+ resources and recommendations for the district as a whole. The context statement and the historic district evaluation focus on the significant cultural and social elements of LGBTQ+ history, including important people and social developments, but this key historic neighborhood has other architecturally significant buildings, too. The ongoing plan amendment process requires review by various boards and commissions. Meanwhile, several neighborhood resources are undergoing historical review, without an approved historical context or district to support Hillcrest's history and sense of place.
