Big Stone Lodge
12237 Old Pomerado Road, Poway

The Camp Big Stone resort was never fully realized, but the complex is an unusual construction of gigantic roof beams and large granite boulders thought to have been brought down from the surrounding steep hillsides. Designated as Poway Historic Site 16 and eligible at the state level as a historical district, significance of the lodge stems from its remarkable architectural style and prominent use of natural materials, as well as its association with resort builders Dr. Homer Hansen and Daniel Stuck, and other notable people in Poway's history.

City officials appeared to back away from demolition during a February 2020 workshop, explaining that the decision to demolish had not yet been made, despite completion of the environmental review process. However, the property zoning includes an affordable housing overlay and the City identified the parcel as contributing to the state Regional Housing Needs Allocation requirement for affordable housing. While a developer could emerge any day with an affordable housing plan, SOHO maintains that this 1920s resource presents a prime opportunity to combine state and federal historic tax credits with the low-income housing tax credit for a quality affordable housing project.
