The City of San Diego Planning Department is asking the public to provide comments on the draft Hillcrest LGBTQ+ Historic Context Statement. Its five themes include social life; community organizations and political activism; media, arts, and culture; and business and commerce. Read the statement HERE. Submit comments HERE. The input of local stakeholders and community members will greatly increase the value, breadth, and depth of this statement, which will ultimately help protect and preserve San Diego's numerous LGBTQ+ historic sites, buildings, and cultural resources.

Initiated through the Hillcrest Focused Plan Amendment, this draft historic context statement is just one piece in the development of a historic preservation plan and strategy for Hillcrest. An additional element is the Multiple Property Listing, which will facilitate the designation of individual properties within Hillcrest that are significant to LGBTQ+ history and heritage. There will also be an evaluation of the Hillcrest Historic District, identified within the Uptown Community Plan, to determine if this district is eligible for designation under Hillcrest's LGBTQ+ history or other criteria. To read more about the historic preservation component to this process and stay up to date on the various steps, scroll down and click on the Hillcrest Focused Plan Amendment found HERE.

Contributing comments is an effective way to be a part of historic preservation in San Diego. SOHO encourages you to submit your comments today to help identify and document the unique LGBTQ+ history and heritage in Hillcrest.
