SOHO's 2025 Most Endangered List
Since 1995, SOHO’s Most Endangered List has been one of our most powerful tools to raise awareness and inspire action to save San Diego’s cultural and historic treasures. In a city recognized nationally for intense development pressures, this list shines a spotlight on the region's heritage buildings and places at risk, in an effort to mobilize the community, draw resources, and influence outcomes.
The results speak for themselves: Of the 94 sites identified since the program began, 58% have been saved. Inclusion on the Most Endangered List has helped deter demolition, curb inappropriate development, and promote rehabilitation and adaptive reuse. In some cases, it has even unlocked critical funding—one site received multiple transformative grants after being listed in 2000.
Each year, historic places across San Diego County face threats from neglect, speculation, and demolition. These properties are not just buildings; they are integral contributors to the character of our neighborhoods, towns, and rural landscapes. Together, they form San Diego's distinct story—and their loss would leave painful, preventable voids in our shared heritage.
SOHO’s advocacy spans the entire county, and our goal remains constant: to protect and preserve the historic architecture and cultural resources that define our region and who we are, while enriching our daily lives.
So much good could be accomplished if only the City’s decision-makers chose to work with the preservation community instead of against it. Tremendous opportunities, including proven affordable housing solutions, are being squandered in favor of short-term gain.
