Chase Bank
4650 Mission Bay Drive, Pacific Beach

This original Home Savings and Loan Bank branch, with its exquisite mosaics by a group of artists that includes the renowned Millard Sheets, and rare architectural design, remains under threat by Chase Bank which has development plans for a new branch building and a drive-thru restaurant. However, this proposal for the last remaining HSL branch in the area, is not consistent with the 2019 amended Pacific Beach Community Plan. The building features an interior folk mural and eight exterior mosaics that include six of relevant historical figures and two San Diego scenes, with a bronze seal sculpture in the front plaza. While the project has yet to submit various environmental documents, the threat of development remains because the required reports could be submitted at any moment. SOHO staff is preparing a City of San Diego historical designation report for submittal to help protect this important resource.
