Barrett Ranch House
This 131-year-old, two-story rural farmhouse, built in 1891, continues to suffer from neglect and vandalism inside and out. This rare surviving example of our fast-disappearing ranching heritage is at serious risk. Its worsening condition has kept it on the Most Endangered List since 2014. The wood facades and architectural details, such as double porches (added later) and a bay window, are still painted barn-red with white trim, as is the large barn next to the house. SOHO hears from area residents who want to reverse the abandoned house’s senseless decline and vulnerability. They and SOHO advocate preserving the buildings and land, but so far there is little progress in saving the backcountry home, barn, and acreage around them. The Jamul Dulzura Community Planning Group would like to transform the property into a community park, where the restored house and barn could host meetings, exhibits, celebrations, and other special events. However, lack of funding to purchase and maintain this corner property remains the volunteer group’s biggest obstacle. The potential in restoring and adapting this iconic ranch and ranch house certainly seem promising, but still elusive. (Scroll to view more photos)
