Granger Music Hall
1700 E. 4th Street, National City

A year ago, SOHO and other preservationists and music lovers lobbied for moving Granger Hall to nearby Pepper Park and rehabilitating it under the Port of San Diego’s master plan. Despite funding and promoting new waterfront parks, the Port took no interest in this early masterpiece designed by renowned architect Irving Gill, who was a genius with acoustics. Now, there are no other plans or possibilities for this landmark that once hosted intimate concerts and recitals. The building remains boarded up, fenced off, and screened by a huge, rustic sign boasting of its historic status. Perhaps worst of all, the music hall is silent. SOHO continues to advocate for its relocation and rehabilitation, so music can once again be heard from the acoustically perfect Granger Hall.
