TO CONVEY THE SIGNIFICANCE of Chicano Park, its founding, and the importance of community activism, these two winners created an impactful children's book.

Titled The Spirit of Chicano Park/El espíritu del Parque Chicano, the bilingual book takes the reader on a journey to the past through the eyes of two children learning about the history of their community, and the fight for a neighborhood park. The pages of this book are filled with colorful illustrations that showcase the sites, scenes, and hand-painted murals one would encounter on a walk through Chicano Park.

Through The Spirit of Chicano Park, the author and illustrator have created an exceptionally valuable resource for children and families to learn about the history of Logan Heights and Barrio Logan.

As a National Historic Landmark, Chicano Park is a symbol of the impact of activism, of celebrating cultural heritage, and finding your voice. These powerful messages can now enrich the lives of all ages of readers.

Beatrice Zamora is a retired educator, a published author, and an active community supporter for over 40 years. She believes that Chicano Park is an inspiration for all, a vibrant example of resilience and self-determination. The story's main message is about community and civic activism and respect for the earth, two values she holds close to her heart.

Maira Meza is a Chicana artist who resides in San Diego. She loves to paint, using vibrant colors to depict Chicano culture. This is Maira's first children's book.

Congratulations to Beatrice Zamora and Maira Meza on their People In Preservation Advocacy in Early Learning Award for an outstanding contribution to protecting and preserving a rich part of San Diego's cultural heritage.
