The Spelling of SOHO

Sometimes organizations have names with unusual spellings. Take the New-York Historical Society for example; many question their use of the hyphen in "New-York." The answer is really pretty simple: When the society was founded in 1804, New York was generally written as "New-York," a practice that was adhered to in books and newspaper titles well into the nineteenth century. Since the society has always had a hyphen in their name—for over 200 years now—they see no reason to change it and proudly continue to use their original name.

The spelling of Save Our Heritage Organisation with an ā€œsā€ has its roots in the organization's founding back in 1969. When the idea of naming the organization "Save Our Heritage" was proposed, one of the founding members, Nick Fintzelberg, suggested using "Organisation" instead of "Organization." The decision to adopt the British spelling with an "s" was made because, at that time, SOHO's primary focus was on preserving Victorian architecture.

Although SOHO's mission has evolved over the years to include the preservation of many and various types of historic architecture, landscapes, and more, the original spelling has been retained by choice. The board of SOHO believe that the unique spelling adds character and distinction to the organization's name. As the founder, Robert Miles Parker, expressed, "The spelling gave us a sense of uniqueness. Personally, I find it appealing and enjoyable to read. It has a pleasant feeling to it."

By maintaining the original spelling of SOHO, the organization honors its history and stands proudly with a name that reflects its longstanding commitment to preserving heritage and architectural treasures.
