Petition to Preserve North Chapel
at Liberty Station

May/June 2018
By A. Hayes

SOHO has been closely monitoring any steps by the developer Corky McMillin Company to change the use of the North Chapel at Liberty Station (formerly the Naval Training Center) in Point Loma. The chapel is dedicated to the men and women of the U.S. Navy and has great significance to recruits, officers, and veterans alike, some of whom visited the Spanish Revival-style sanctuary before being deployed or reserved it for weddings and memorials.

At the Peninsula Planners March 15 meeting, Ronald Slayan presented a letter from architect and SOHO board member Wayne Donaldson, which explains that NTC Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Properties state the chapel's interior is to remain intact (page 53).

SOHO also provided public testimony at the meeting opposing any architectural or programming changes to this historic building and sent a letter to the mayor and city council on March 13. After minimal discussion, the planning group deferred this issue to the Project Review Committee for further discussion soon.

Please sign the petition to Preserve a Historic San Diego Site: North Chapel at Liberty Station NTC.
