National City Designates 27 Historical Resources

At the October National City Council meeting, members voted 3-1-1 to add 27 historical properties to the National City List of Historical Sites, including the Stein Farm at 1808 F Avenue. With these additions, the City has designated about 60 total resources, four of which are also on the National Register of Historical Places. One is Granger Music Hall, currently on SOHO's Most Endangered List. (See SOHO's just-announced 2019 MEL HERE.
The Council asked staff in May 2018 to update the City's historical properties list, which entailed city-wide research and the evaluation of 32 resources, in collaboration with the National City Historical Society (part of their designation ordinance). Sadly, two of these important resources have already been lost at 1929 and 1932 Harding Street. When the designation process reached the Planning Commission in September 2019, 110 D Avenue was excluded; the owner gave no reason, at least not publicly.
SOHO is encouraged that National City has followed through on adding resources to its local list, but we are discouraged that despite SOHO's letter (see HERE) urging the Council to adopt all 30 resources, another two were also excluded due to owner objections with no stated reason. They are at 1320 E. 24th Street and 2715 A Avenue. The silver lining, however, is that during this research and evaluation process, the Historical Society identified 50 other potentially significant properties we hope will be considered for historical designation very soon. Please join SOHO in writing to the council@nationalcityca.gov National City Council, and asking them to initiate review of these additional important resources.
