Celebrating 10 Years of SOHO at the Marston House Museum & Gardens
2009-2019

FREE Admission!
November/December 2019

In 2009 the city of San Diego entrusted SOHO with the preservation, interpretation, and year-round operation of the Marston House Museum. SOHO's 10 years as the managers and operators of the 8,500-square-foot estate on five acres, have been eventful ones. It is as if the Marston House has always been a part of SOHO, because of the kindred spirit that we have found in George Marston, known as San Diego's first historic preservationist.

To thank our visitors and supporters for a historic 10 years, we will be celebrating with FREE general admission all day on November 2, 2019 for all San Diego residents. SOHO operates and manages the museum for the City of San Diego, for the benefit of all San Diegans, and visitors.

Bruce Coons, SOHO's executive director notes, "It is hard to believe it has been 10 years already since the opening—looking back at our history and how the community has supported us, our partnership with the city has been a positive one for San Diegans. It's not just the museum that is being preserved here—it's also in large part, the history of the community."

Enjoy light refreshments and one of San Diego's most pleasant public spaces, the home and gardens of the Marston family. Join in the celebration by visiting during the FREE open house. The museum has a dedicated group of well-trained volunteer docents, who will be on hand to answer questions and provide tours.

And in a fitting commemoration, we will launch the Marston House Museum Photo Guide Book, a richly illustrated visual guide to the home that visitors may purchase.

Along with the house, the permanent exhibit, The Marston Legacy: Progress & Preservation unfolds against the furnished, domestic backdrop of one of California's finest examples of Arts and Crafts architecture, and also highlights the accomplishments of George Marston's wife, Anna Gunn Marston, their children, and grandchildren. The impact of this socially and politically engaged family resonates to this day with fellow citizens concerned about the future of historic Balboa Park and other significant public landmarks, schools and universities, social and economic opportunities, immigration, and preserving what's historically authentic about San Diego.

Visitors will want to take extra time to visit the Marston House museum shop which features artisan works and is stocked with beautiful Arts and Crafts era gift items, tiles and pottery, jewelry, teas, candles, books, and museum souvenirs.
