Listed on the National Register of Historic Places last February, the Portuguese Chapel was dedicated with a plaque noting this prestigious status on September 16, 2017. With the Point Loma street of Avenida de Portugal closed for the dedication, members of the United Portuguese Sociedade do Espírito Santo (UPSES) celebrated this exciting accomplishment. Adding their congratulatory remarks were also San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, County Supervisor Ron Roberts, and a representative from Councilmember Lorie Zapf's office.

SOHO has been involved with this church since 2015, when UPSES members Geri and John Lauriano approached staff for help in preparing the National Register nomination report. Knowing this special building from 1922 has been the pride of Point Loma's Portuguese community for nearly 100 years, SOHO worked with the Laurianos for about two years to achieve its historical designation at the federal level.

Congratulations to Geri and John Lauriano and the entire UPSES on adding this important chapel to the National Register of Historic Places!
