American Literary Heroes Program Returns to the Marston House

As America commemorates its 250th anniversary, Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) and our longtime friends at Write Out Loud continue a special two-part series celebrating four of the nation’s most influential literary voices.
July’s presentation of Mark Twain and Walt Whitman was a memorable and moving one, despite the extraordinary heat. The small but appreciative audience who braved the punishing temperatures was treated to outstanding performances, as the dedicated actors never let the heat diminish their energy or enthusiasm. We’re hoping for much more comfortable weather when the series returns September 20, 2026!
Please join us for part two of American Literary Heroes in the historic Marston House rose garden on Sunday, September 20, from 2–4 p.m., featuring Emily Dickinson and Henry David Thoreau.
Experience Dickinson's revolutionary poetry and Thoreau's timeless reflections on nature, individual conscience, and civil responsibility. In the first presentation, written and performed by Rhianna Basore, Dickinson comes to life through her groundbreaking language, form, and imagery. The Thoreau portion, written by Richard Platt and performed by Steve Smith, reveals the writer’s lifelong embrace of human rights, simple living, and the natural world.
The Marston House provides a fitting setting for these dramatic presentations. Built in 1905, the home reflects George and Anna Marston’s enduring commitment to literature, education, civic engagement, social change, and conservation—values that resonate throughout the works being presented.

Bring your own lawn chair or blanket and keep an eye on the weather as the program approaches. An umbrella can be useful for sun or unexpected weather, along with bottled water and anything else you need to stay comfortable.

Please note: No parking is allowed on Seventh Avenue. Metered parking is available on surrounding streets; please allow extra time to find a space. For disabled or elderly guests, friends or family may drop off passengers at the front of the Museum Shop before parking elsewhere.
