Don’t Miss the Final Three Penning the Past Lectures of 2025
September/October 2025

SOHO’s Penning the Past webinar series is back this fall with three more engaging presentations on San Diego’s cultural heritage. Now in its second year, this monthly Zoom series, on the second Saturday from 11am to noon, has become a favorite way among San Diegans to hear from local historians and authors about the neighborhoods, people, and events that shaped our region. These final sessions of 2025 will continue the lively storytelling and community connections that our SOHO audience looks forward to each month.

On September 13, historian and author Richard L. Carrico will guide us through the evolution of Ramona, California. Drawing from his book Ramona, Carrico will explore the area’s roots with the Kumeyaay people, its transformation through Spanish land grants, and its celebrated status as the “Turkey Capital of the World.” His talk will highlight how Ramona’s ranching and rodeo traditions have endured even as the town embraced the modern era.

Next, on October 11, historian and preservationist Katherine Hon returns for History Snippets 2: North Park Street Names and Other Stories. Hon will reveal the quirky and fascinating history of the community’s street nomenclature, from the 1870s subdivision maps to the bold changes made by a city engineer in 1900. Along the way, she will introduce us to the individuals whose names now mark North Park’s east-west streets, bringing to life the character and evolution of this iconic neighborhood.

The 2025 series concludes on November 8 with historian and retired SDPD officer Gary Mitrovich, who will uncover the forgotten story of East San Diego and its short-lived police department. Founded during the 1912 land boom, East San Diego grew rapidly before being absorbed into the city of San Diego just eleven years later. Through rare photographs and compelling stories from his book East of San Diego, Mitrovich will share tales of bank robberies, political scandal, and the challenges of rapid urban growth in this overlooked chapter of local history.

These lectures are free to SOHO members and $10 for non-members, with proceeds directly supporting our preservation and education mission.
