One of the many important public programs where SOHO stays vigilant is the City of San Diego's historical review process. It gives the public a heads up on possibly endangered resources. When a property owner or developer applies for a building permit, the permit address is listed on the Historical Reviews website for five days. This listing satisfies the California Environmental Quality Act requirement to obtain public input about potential historical resources. The website is very helpful for keeping tabs on your and other neighborhoods and learning early in the process if a historical building might be threatened. Note: This website does not list properties that are historically designated, because they are already identified as historic buildings.

SOHO reviews this website daily to identify properties that are potentially historic and we often perform additional historical and archival research, such as reviewing Sanborn fire maps (located online at the City of San Diego public library) and newspapers, tracking down historical photographs and other miscellaneous evidence, and even making site visits when needed. SOHO also supports the neighborhood planning groups and other preservation stakeholders by sharing our findings when we identify a historical resource in their neighborhood.

SOHO encourages citizens, planning groups, and all interested stakeholders to provide historical information and comments on the resources listed HERE. Alongside SOHO, public input is important to help the Historical Resources Board staff to best evaluate these potential historical resources, because they might not have the information, photographs, and memory that you do!
