The numbers are definitely going in the right direction. If President Biden's proposed FY22 budget for the Historic Preservation Fund is approved by Congress, a record $151.8 million will support myriad preservation programs, projects, and agencies throughout the nation. This sum surpasses the previous all-time high of $144.3 million in FY21. Biden's proposal also exceeds the statutorily authorized annual $150 million for the HPF, which leads preservationists everywhere to hope this administration will favor future increases.

With Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as Interior Secretary and to hold a Cabinet post, it is fitting that Tribal Historic Preservation Offices would receive the biggest increase in FY22 year: a 53.3% increase, or $23 million, over FY21. African American and Civil Rights grants and State Historic Preservation Offices are among several other areas earmarked for substantial budget boosts. Another priority of the Biden administration is the backlog of deferred maintenance in the National Park System, using funding made available through the Great American Outdoors Act passed in 2020. Rehabilitating historic structures is a key element of the program.
