Jessica Johnson is an explorer on an intriguing mission. Her fascinating new book, Abandoned San Diego, is a trip back in time and partly why she won this year's People In Preservation Town Crier award from SOHO in May. Excellent, evocative photographs document 19 historic sites in various stages of deterioration, from deserted gold mines and neglected cemeteries to the cavernous remains of the California Theatre.

Johnson is the founder and creator of the unique website Hidden San Diego, which features remote locations, abandoned, neglected, and haunted sites, old stagecoach routes and the San Diego Flume, and other "lost" history. She has more than 22,000 Facebook followers and 1,600 Instagram posts.

Jessica's knowledge of the area is impressive and her enthusiasm definitely infectious. A Poway resident, she will sign books after her presentation at the Marston House Museum & Gardens on August 17 at 4pm. Admission is free. Come along for unexpected adventures you may have overlooked. We predict you'll never view historic San Diego the same way again.
