San Diego Library Lecture with Robin Lakin
May/June 2026

Many in our community know the Marston House Museum well, but hearing its stories from those who care for and interpret it daily offers a fresh, new perspective.

SOHO curator and historian Robin Lakin will present a free special lecture at the San Diego Public Library Mission Hills-Hillcrest Knox branch, revealing how SOHO tells the Marston House’s remarkable history through storyboards and interpretive framework. This insightful program will walk attendees through the narratives that guide in-person visitors through the home—from the Marston family and their civic vision to the architectural partnership of William S. Hebbard and Irving J. Gill.

Built in 1905 for the inspiring leader, philanthropist, and preservation advocate George W. Marston and his wife Anna Gunn Marston, the Marston House remains one of California’s most compelling expressions of the Arts and Crafts movement. The house reflects a remarkable level of craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and the progressive architectural ideas associated with Gill’s work.

Robin’s talk will offer an inside look at how these layered histories are distilled and presented to the public today, revealing the curatorial choices behind the furnished rooms that visitors encounter when they step through the front door.

To extend this experience, beyond the lecture, attendees will receive complimentary passes for a future guided tour Marston House Museum. (Open Friday through Sunday 10am–4pm)
