County of San Diego Historic Site Board Updates
By Courtney Ann Coyle
March/April 2026

In 2025, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors seated several new members on the County Historic Site Board: this writer, Courtney Ann Coyle; Yvette Porter Moore; and Marc Schaefer. They join current members Paul Johnson and Jim Royle (chair).

Also in 2025, the board took action on four residences, recommending that the director of Planning and Development Services approve their designation to the Local Register of Historic Places and participation in the Mills Act Program. Like the City of San Diego’s register, a resource name in two parts separated by a slash indicates the historic owner’s name followed by the name of the noted architect or builder. Here are descriptions of the four resources:

In La Mesa, the Isadore Teacher/Mable and Mintz Residence, 9947 Fuerte Drive, is a Mid-Century Modern custom ranch house constructed in 1959. The designation would include the home and attached garage, on-site pool, boulders, mortared stone wall, and stone patio.

In Rancho Santa Fe, the Flavio and Gladys Antelline Residence at 15134 Via de la Valle, was built in 1960 in the Organic Geometric Mid-Century Modern style. The designation would include the home and attached garage, exterior staircase and water features, pool, and driveway with carpark. For the Charles and Elizabeth Du Pont House at 4545 North Lane, Del Mar, the board recommended designation of this Mid-Century Modern home, built in 1960, but they also formed a subcommittee to assist in reviewing the property and to ensure that future construction conforms with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. This residence, photographed by Julius Shulman, was found significant for work by the San Diego architecture firms of Liebhardt and Weston (1960, year built) and Tucker, Sadler, and Bennett (1970, additions).

In Escondido, the Daniel J. Weseloh and Karen A. Weseloh/James Rodney Youngson House (1977) is a ranch house with Asian influences at 2315 Via Cascabel. It was found to have achieved architectural significance despite being less than 50 years old.

With a property in Bonita already under review by the board, it is hoped that 2026 will be an active year for designations. Other recent agenda items have included discussions around updates to the County CEQA guidelines focused on integrating Tribal Cultural Resources, developing a list of master architects for the County, and increasing outreach to the Borrego Springs community for resources associated with the Mid-century Modern movement and master architects.
