SOHO Joins Kate’s Trees
March/April 2023

As SOHO works to protect and preserve the historic architectural and cultural resources of our region, our heritage also includes the majestic, mature, and amazing trees in our neighborhoods. Over the years, SOHO has celebrated historic trees and advocated for their historic designation and protection. Today with more of our historic trees at risk than ever before due to tree conservation policies and climate change, pest and other threats, the need for planting new ones is not just a good idea but an essential one. Now we’re joining Kate Sessions Commitment, aka Kate’s Trees, to invite San Diegans and SOHO members to grow more trees in their front, back, and side yards.

Suitable trees can be purchased and picked up at Walter Andersen Nursery in Old Town and other local nurseries for about $50 in the 5-gallon size, and are easy to plant and care for. Right away, you’ll have more nature in your daily life. In five years, you’ll know the tree is successfully established. In ten years, you can sit under its shade, and in twenty years it will be a family or neighborhood legacy. And in fifty years, a tree worthy of historic protection!
