Consider Joining a City Board
March/April 2022

There are many ways to volunteer and help SOHO’s mission through city government. Serving on the City of San Diego’s Historical Resources Board is the most obvious, and a very satisfying way to learn more about historic and archaeological resources and various older neighborhoods and historic districts in the making. At press time, there are three vacant seats on the eleven-person HRB. You can see the openings (marked in red) and apply online. The purpose and operations of all city boards are explained, indicate a contact person, and are clearly marked with a tab.

For example, now HRB preferably needs to fill two seats with people with special expertise: engineering and real estate. Members—a fascinating bunch practicing different relevant professions such as history, architecture, and law—are appointed by the mayor and approved by the city council.

You’ll find info on all the city’s boards HERE. Scroll through them to find opportunities that intersect with historic preservation and your interests. Examples include the Commission for Arts and Culture, Park and Recreation Board, Community Forest Advisory Board, and Old Town San Diego Planned District Review Board.

Consider advancing historic preservation and our shared quality of life in a rewarding role that offers learning opportunities, new colleagues, and satisfaction, all while supporting SOHO’s mission.
