County Archives Open in Santee
March/April 2020

For the first time since the County of San Diego was formed in 1850, all of its valuable archives are in one place and available for public viewing on computer terminals. Thousands of original maps, birth and death records, deeds, and more are now housed in a climate-controlled section of the new 25,000-square-foot County of San Diego East County Office and Archives, which opened in February 2020. The building, which also replaces the former offices of the Assessor, Recorder, County Clerk, and Tax Collector in El Cajon, is at 10144 Mission Gorge Road near Cuyamaca Street in Santee.

Board member Paul Johnson and Marston House Historian, Sarai Johnson, attended the archive's soft opening and were so impressed that they made a video about the new facility, watch it HERE.

The archives is also the first zero net facility of its kind in the nation and a leader in sustainability. Controls for heating, cooling, and humidity to exacting standards both protect the valuable contents and gobble energy. The building was successfully designed and engineered to generate its own power to match what it consumes, resulting in zero net energy bills for the county and taxpayers.

"This new archive is a significant step forward for the preservation of San Diego history," Paul reported.
