Rise UP for Arts & Culture!
March/April 2018

The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership is mobilizing its members, the San Diego City Council, and the region's residents to make sure the city's FY2019 arts and culture budget is not cut by 33% over reductions made in FY2018 (and FY2017), as proposed by the mayor.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer wants to further the dismal downward trend of arts and culture funding. The allocation was $15.1 million in FY2017, reduced to $14.7 million in FY2018, and now, a deep cut to a mere $10.4 million in the FY2019 proposed budget.

We need YOU to share your personal stories about how SOHO has positively impacted and enhanced your life, or that of your family, so we can share these special memories with the council and mayor. These personal stories will help city officials understand the immeasurable long-term benefits, enrichment, and opportunities that SOHO, and many other arts and culture groups, provide to San Diegans every day.

Thankfully, a majority of councilmembers called for an increase in arts and culture funding in their individual budget priority memos. Please send a special thank you to Council members David Alvarez, Barbara Bry, Myrtle Cole, Georgette Gomez, Chris Ward, and Lorie Zapf for valuing and prioritizing arts and culture in their budget memos.

In addition to your personal SOHO stories, please urge your councilmember to support an increase to arts and culture funding in FY2019. And stay tuned to learn when the next budget discussion will take place and how you can Rise UP for Arts and Culture funding. Thank you!
