Penning the Past: New Season, New Stories
January/February 2026
SOHO’s popular Penning the Past lecture series returns in February 2026 for its third year, continuing our exploration of the many layers of San Diego’s rich and varied history. Held monthly on a Saturday morning at 11am from February through November, these one-hour Zoom talks have become a favorite gathering place for history enthusiasts, preservationists, and lifelong learners alike.
This year’s slate features a thoughtfully curated mix of returning favorites and new voices.
Historian Richard Carrico will open the season with an engaging look at the Presidio and its impact on the region’s early colonial story. In another installment of the series, Sandra Wilhoit will share her deep knowledge of the Gaslamp Quarter’s buildings and people. Rev. Dr. Mark Hargreaves will offer insights into San Diego’s modernist architecture, Nancy Carol Carter will tell the story of one of Balboa Park’s most beloved landmarks, and Alex Bevil will bring his expertise on Old Town’s historic fabric. Later in the year, Martin S. Lindsay will illuminate a colorful chapter of local pop culture, and just in time for Halloween, archaeologist Seth Mallios will explore San Diego’s heritage through its cemeteries. We’ll be adding more speakers and surprises as the season unfolds.
Whether your interests lie in architecture, neighborhood history, cultural landscapes, or early San Diego stories, this year’s program promises a lively and wide-ranging journey inspired by the people and places that continue to shape our region.
Mark your calendars for another year of discovery and connection on the second Saturday each month. Click to purchase tickets or register.
