Allen Hazard, Professor Emeritus

A native San Diegan, Allen Hazard has been a long-time SOHO member serving on the preservation action and events and education committees, as well as serving as the chairperson for several SOHO home tours.

Allen grew up in National City in a modest 1920s bungalow. He graduated from San Diego State University with a B.A. in history and physical education, and a master’s degree in kinesiology. As an educator with a passion for historic preservation, he has given architectural lectures on the Prairie School and, most recently, he has lectured on Irving Gill and the Prairie School at the 31st and the 36th National Arts and Crafts Conference at the 1913 Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina in 2019 and in 2023, at Pasadena Heritage's Craftsman to Modern virtual conference in 2021.

Active in community preservation, Allen co-founded Mission Hills Heritage, and was responsible for developing education programs, including home tours, walking tours, and a lecture series. He and his wife, Janet O’Dea, owned the 1914 Powers Plumbing in Mission Hills for many years and together they wrote the Arcadia Publishing book, Images of America, Mission Hills. They were also a driving force behind the Mission Hills Historic District and have written articles on their district experience for national Arts and Crafts magazines, Style 1900 and American Bungalow. They have also researched and written many historic designation packages in most of San Diego’s historic neighborhoods as architectural historians. Allen lives preservation each and every day and believes passionately in the SOHO mission of advocating and educating for San Diego County’s historic resources, small and grand buildings and homes, cultural landscapes and more.
