Del Mar Heritage
A Modern Legacy Award

Del Mar HeritageNowhere in San Diego is it more evident that we are a community at a crossroads than in the Hillcrest /Banker's Hill area. While much of Sixth Avenue is being bulldozed and out-of-scale high-rises are redefining the skyline along the park's edges, the retention and renovation of the historic Solamon Apartments, now known as 3200 Sixth Avenue, is a wonderfully positive act. Built in 1959, this classic Henry Hester design is a rare surviving example of large scale modern architecture. Its design is characterized by continuous flowing planes and the connection between indoor and outdoor space. The current developers recognized the value of its excellence in design, human scale and established relationship with Balboa Park. Because of their foresight, it stands out today as prominently as the day it was built.
