Saved buildings
save our heritage organisation

President's Message

By Erik Hanson

August may have been the busiest month in SOHO history. Our organization has never had so much financial, staff and physical stability. Our revenue has, for the first time ever, allowed for a full time Executive Director.

Our new offfices in the Verna House, just east of the Whaley House in Old Town, will allow us to have a constant physical presence for visitors and residents and to drop our P.O. Box in favor of a real address. We are in negotiations to get a popularly demanded coffee shop in one of the two false front buildings on the property. Our wonderful gift and book shop will open in the Verna House and, for the first time in 40 years, the admission table will be out of the Whaley House front hall. If you haven't been there in a while, come on down, your membership is an unlimited free pass, and more things will be correctly restored each time you come.

Speaking of the Whaley House, it feels almost as if it can breathe now after its change of furnishings, its first good cleaning since the 1960's and its improved access to several of the rooms. You know, I think if I died and later came back, then found out they'd put a weather vane in my kitchen, painted my windows shut, installed florescent tubes and repainted by cutting in around the furniture, I'd haunt the place also.

There is a lesson in the case of the Whaley house for the many who, each year, want to tear down a modest, old La Jolla house and build their Maxed-out Mediterranean McMansion. If you get rid of enough useless clutter, your house will seem twice as big, and you can even have room for a garden.
