Girl Scout Troop 6786 & Lemon Grove Historical Society
Stewardship Award

Girl Scout Troop 6786 & Lemon Grove Historical SocietyIn the challenging world of historic preservation, even a relatively small project can require plenty of physical labor and many hours to complete. The pillars on Buena Vista and Cuyamaca Avenues mark the entrance to Lemon Grove's first subdivision and the former Fisher Farm. They serve as an important link to the community's history and to Alice Day Fisher, the woman who brought the Girl Scouts of America to San Diego in 1918.

Over time, the pair of pillars deteriorated into an eyesore. They were often covered in graffiti, and had been hit by cars. Original stucco had been lost, and the globes that once crowned the pillars lay cracked on the ground.

The Lemon Grove Historical Society put a call out to the public for the restoration of the pillars and the Girl Scouts answered in a big way. This mighty team not only raised $10,000, but spent over 300 volunteer hours to restore the pillars, cleaning off decades of grime and paint, and researching early 20th-century stucco techniques. Rain runoff had eroded the original stucco, so they added succulent beds around the bases to help divert runoff and keep cars away. The team repaired and re-stuccoed all the surfaces, reshaped and repaired the globes, applied anti-graffiti paint, and installed historic plaques.

This project was a learning experience, not only in history, but in construction, architecture, art, humility, patience, and perseverance—for four 13-year-old preservationists! They have proven that age, gender, finances, and physical ability are no obstacle when you are dedicated to preserving and honoring your community's history. SOHO is proud to award Girl Scout Troop 6786 of Spring Valley, and scouts Lianne Alforque, Danika Cuellar, Cher Flores, and Jordyn Gresham; and the Lemon Grove Historical Society the Stewardship award.
