WHALEY HOUSE YOUTH DOCENT PROGRAM
(We only accept applications for volunteers March through August)
Our bright, dedicated, and enthusiastic youth docents, age 12 through 17, work alongside our adult staff and volunteers in serving guests who visit the Whaley House for the daytime self-guided tours. They greet guests as they arrive, answer questions, tell stories, and share the history of the Whaley House and the people who lived there.
The youth volunteers receive training in customer service techniques as well as historic and cultural information about the Whaley House and the Old Town area. They must be prepared to answer questions from visitors not only about the museum, the Whaley family, and history of early San Diego in general, but often about the paranormal, which is handled in terms of the Whaley House folklore.
Through the youth docent program, our middle- and high-school aged volunteers receive valuable training and real-life job skills. They gain experience in the application and interview process, public speaking, customer service, working with a diverse staff, and commitment to a work schedule. In addition, they meet new friends who share their interests as they deepen their knowledge of local history and develop their appreciation for historic preservation.
