Chair Kilkenny:
I respectfully urge you and the CCDC Board to approve the Fat City Loft Coastal Development Permit and allow the project to move forward.
I am aware that the applicant, GLJ Partners and Jonathan Segal Architects, has reached a design solution with Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) that saves and restores the main façade and key historic portions of the Fat City Restaurant to its original 1941 Tops appearance everyone recognizes as a San Diego icon. The SOHO Board also unanimously supported a design that incorporates the Top's building into the project.
Fat City/China Camp is now closed and the property will remain in a state of neglect and blight if we do not redevelop it. CCDC has a great opportunity to take action that will enhance the entrance into the Little Italy neighborhood and beautify the view from the waterfront. Your action to approve the Coastal Development Permit on a project that is consistent with the Planned District Ordinance (PDO) will preserve the historic value of the location and help to renew the cultural connections to Little Italy and the waterfront that the building would provide as a restored and active site.
