Bruce Coons - Executive Director

Bruce Coons leads policy and advocacy implementation and overall administration and operations.

He began this role in 2000 after serving as a two-term president and volunteer at large since 1985. An architectural historian, restoration and historic design professional with a background in archeology as well, he has been deeply involved in historic preservation for over 40 years and has actively worked with historic resources since his youth.

Under his leadership, SOHO has continued the crucial role of its founders to preserve San Diego city and county wide history while building the organization into one of the most powerful advocacy voices in the region, and expanding SOHO's reach exponentially and increasing its budget fiftyfold.

Bruce has an encyclopedic knowledge of San Diego history and historic building construction and as such leads SOHO with a broad and all-encompassing approach to historic preservation. This includes not only architecture, but cultural landscapes, linear resources and more, all with an understanding of the crucial role historic resources play in the everyday life of San Diegans.

Under his stewardship, SOHO has become a driving force for preservation in the San Diego region and beyond, finding solutions to save threatened historic structures, fostering stronger preservation laws and incentives, raising awareness of the region's unique architectural treasures, and empowering people to take an active role in preserving their shared, tangible history.
