Progress & Preservation
A conversation with San Diego journalists Roger Showley and Welton Jones

Two seasoned, long-time observers of San Diego's growth and evolution will discuss the still relevant impact of George and Anna Marston, their children, and grandson Hamilton Marston, on regional life and character. Their active volunteerism and philanthropy advanced the family's progressive vision for a San Diego with ample parks and open space, equal opportunities for education and employment, preservation of historic landmarks, and cultural enrichment for all.

Roger Showley was a staff writer at The San Diego Union-Tribune before retiring in March 2018. In recent years he covered growth and development in the business section and previously wrote in the Home section, covering a wide range of subjects, including historic preservation, urban design, downtown redevelopment, housing and commercial construction. He has won numerous awards for his journalistic work, including the Geranium Award from the Friends of the Marston House. He is a third-generation San Diego and graduate in history at UC San Diego. He has written three books on local history and is working on several others. Since retiring, he has joined several boards and committees dealing with Balboa Park, architecture, planning and history. He lives with his wife, Carol, in Scripps Ranch and they have two grown children.

Welton Jones joined the San Diego Union in 1966 and served as a reporter, editor, critic and columnist until his retirement in 2001. Since then, he has been busy writing, directing and producing stage plays in the San Diego area and pursing a long-time interest in history and historical preservation and land-use. He has served as a director on the boards of the Committee of 100 and SOHO. A native of Texas, he graduated from Texas A&M University and worked for the Lubbock Avalance-Journal, New York Herald-Tribune, Houston Post and Shreveport Times before moving permanently to California. He was elected to four terms as chairman of he American Theatre Critics Association, represented the USA in numerous international critics' meetings and served on a Pulitzer Prize jury. He is a reserve captain (retired) in the U.S.Coast Guard, father of two and grandfather of two.

Emcee Rick Crawford is the supervisor of Special Collections at the San Diego Public Library. He is the former archives director at the San Diego Historical Society where he also edited the Journal of San Diego History. He has degrees in history and library science and has written extensively on local history, including articles for the San Diego Union-Tribune and the books San Diego Yesterday and The Way We Were in San Diego.
