This year, Coronado MainStreet's Annual Garden Celebration benefiting their 16 Orange Ave Median Gardens will be held at the historic Stephens-Terry Estate, 711 A Avenue in Coronado. Everyone's invited for live music, restaurant chefs serving sublime treats, a silent auction and good times in this historic setting.
Hebbard & Gill designed the original home at 711 A Ave in 1898 for retired Standard Oil executive A.P. Stephens. Mead & Requa modified it in 1917 for former New York Surgeon General, Marshall O. Terry. Then, in the early 1920's, Terry commissioned respected San Francisco architect Edward G. Bolles to replace that home with the mansion we know today. Period construction drawings by both Mead & Requa and Bolles confirm this Terry history.
The mansion grew to over 14,000SF during its long construction that lasted from 1922 to 1928. Its five stories include a basement and lookout tower. Left vacant for several years after Mrs. Terry's departure, the Estate was purchased by the Hansen Family (the current owners) in 1950. One of the largest properties in town, its brick walls encompass nearly 2/3 an acre of lushly landscaped 1920's gardens with original lath house, arbors, pergolas, terraces and fountains. Grand first floor rooms including the Entrance Hall, Ballroom, Living Room and formal Dining Room will be open for the Garden Celebration.
This is a rare opportunity to experience an original, intact Roaring 20's Estate complete with original materials and finishes. There is European wallpaper with hand-painted murals, extensive woodwork in multiple species, ornate plaster ceilings, steel doors & windows (with concealable rolling screens), grand fireplaces, hand rubbed plaster, and an original (fully operational) paneled elevator.
