 SOHO's Modernism Committee is proud to present Clairemont: The Village within a City, a historic architecture tour on Saturday, August 11. This self-driven tour takes Mid-Century modernism fans through the architectural treasures of one of the nation's first and largest planned postwar communities.
At the end of World War II an influx of families began to settle in America's Finest City and the need for additional housing and recreation spaces became clear. Clairemont was one of those communities that met the needs of a growing postwar generation. As a result, its suburban landscape catered to the modern family's American dream, two-car garages and functional commercial, public, and religious buildings.
The comprehensive tour introduces visitors to over 40 of Clairemont's best Mid-Century modern buildings including libraries, schools, religious institutions, and residential neighborhoods. Learn about the people behind the development of the Village within a City and indulge in the spirit of post-war optimism.
The registration begins at 9:30am with a lecture and orientation beginning at 10am by noted local historian and long-time Clairemont resident Alexander D. Bevil.
