November/December 2022

The historic home tours we’ve missed so much during the pandemic are back! Act quickly, though, because the La Mesa History Center 16th Annual Home tour is Saturday, November 5 from 9am to 3pm. For tickets and more information, visit lamesahistorycenter.com

The history center (formerly La Mesa Historical Society) and Grossmont High School and Museum are presenting “Fabulous Foothillers,” featuring the century-old Grossmont High “Castle” and the homes and gardens of Brier Tract, Mt. Helix, and Grossmont.

The tour spans early 20th-century plans for creating rustic, bohemian artist colonies of Arts and Crafts-influenced, organic residences to popular “revival” style houses of the inter-war years. It also includes Mid-Century Modern homes built of wood and glass window-walls that embrace the area’s rocky hillsides and sweeping views, according to historian Jim Newland, La Mesa History Center president and a 2022 SOHO People In Preservation winner. Consider the discoveries you’ll make exploring this geographically diverse area that Newland calls “rural suburban.”
