Author Maria E. Garcia, Native American Archaeological Monitor Carmen Lucas, and the Maritime Museum of San Diego are receiving Governor's Historic Preservation Awards on November 2 in Sacramento. San Diego is home to three of the eight people and projects Governor Jerry Brown is saluting in his final group of honorees.

Garcia is being honored for her book, La Neighbor: A Settlement House in Logan Heights, a collection of oral histories and essays about generations of working class, mostly Mexican American families. For them, the nonprofit Neighborhood House, in what's now called Barrio Logan, was a lifeline and a community anchor. Ranging from humorous to tragic, the interviews bring to life residents and their industrious way of life in a neglected but well organized neighborhood.

Garcia, also the winner of a SOHO People In Preservation Award in 2015, launched her book last year in the Marston House garden. Decades earlier, George Marston and two of his daughters, Mary and Helen—all known for their progressive social stance and philanthropy—held fundraisers for the settlement house at their historic home.

Lucas, a Kwaaymii Laguna Indian, has worked in cultural resource management as a Native American Monitor, consultant, and educator for nearly thirty years. She has helped protect many Indian burial sites so ultimately they remain undisturbed, as at UCSD's former Chancellor's House, and the tribal ceremonial and burial grounds around Padre Dam.

The Governor's Award to the Maritime Museum recognizes its handcrafted, wooden replica of the Galleon San Salvador, explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo's Spanish flagship, for education and outreach. The $6.5 million project, completed largely by volunteers, enables the public to sail as if on the first European ship to reach San Diego Bay in 1542.

SOHO congratulates all eight winners, especially those preserving San Diego's rich multicultural, multidimensional heritage.
