Rescuing San Diego's Oldest House

You may have read a recent Logan Jenkins column in The San Diego Union-Tribune that describes SOHO's involvement in an exciting new preservation venture for Casa de Carrillo at Presidio Hills Golf Course. We had not announced this project yet, as the lease with the City of San Diego is not a done deal.
However, should this arrangement come to pass, SOHO's board of directors thought it fitting that SOHO operate Casa de Carrillo, the oldest house in San Diego (c. 1817), and open it just after San Diego's 250th Birthday in 2020.And, of course, the historic adobe and 9-acre golf course site offer another wonderful George Marston connection, as he donated the land for public benefit.
Board member David Swarens wrote this about the plan, which includes an archaeological survey and protections: "One of the things that impressed me with this proposal is both the respect and knowledge of the layers of history here, from Kumeyaay pre-European contact, though Spanish Colonial, Mexican, and American times, including the Marston and golf heritage. I have been told that the golf [course,] now arguably historic in its own right, was a condition of the Marston gift of this land. I do know that a major commercial/hotel developer backed off from a proposal for this site a few years back for that reason.
"This is an opportunity to salvage a now blighted site and celebrate the substantial narrative of San Diego history which can be interpreted here," he concluded.
We'll keep you posted on what we hope will be another important SOHO-managed museum that will restore and honor San Diego's oldest dwelling.
