Back by Popular Demand, Bean Day
November 2016
By Bobbie Bagel

Beans, beans, beans. They are healthy, delicious, and inexpensive-a real gift of nature. There are hundreds of different varieties, and our farmer friend, Mike Reeske, knows a lot about them. His goals are to discover old, often ancient varieties, propagate them, and cultivate them on his farm. These organic heirloom beans are more nutritious and tastier than the dried beans found in supermarkets today.

Mike and Chris Reeske are the owners of the Rio del Rey Farm in Pauma Valley. They gave a presentation at the Santa Ysabel Store last year. It was interesting, and so much fun, and his tasty recipe samples were so good that we decided to invite the couple back every year.

The Reeskes are hard-working farmers, but they are also travellers and researchers. They visit locations all over the Southwest and South America searching for new bean and seed lines. They have great stories about their travels and the fascinating things they have learned.

Join us on Sunday, November 13 for our second annual Bean Day at the Santa Ysabel store at 1pm. Enjoy the free lecture and cooking demonstration.

Better make room in your pantry or kitchen cupboard shelves, so you can take home wonderful organic varieties of beans like Rio Zape, Anasazi, Mayocoba, and the Cherokee Trail of Tears. Purchase two pounds or more and receive a 10% discount.

Adding to the festive fall spirit will be special entertainment provided by Los Californios. They are a group of musicians who play and sing secular music of old California, from the days when our state was part of Spain and then Mexico.

Mark it on your calendar, Sunday, November 13. Hope to see you there.
