Apple Days in the Backcountry
October 2016
By Bobbie Bagel

Crunch into a nice, fat, juicy apple! It is fall in the backcountry, and the start of the season is Julian's Apple Days festival. Pie baking and pie eating contests, and apple picking are all part of the annual activities.

While the official celebration was just held during the last weekend in September, there are lots of apple activities going on throughout the next month or two. Driving up in October is a great idea: Avoid the festival traffic jams without missing out on fresh cider or pie! And, of course, no visit to Julian is complete without a stop at the Santa Ysabel Store.

Truth be told, the drought has taken its toll on the orchards, so do call ahead to confirm that apples are still available for picking. Locals have found many ways to keep this great seasonal tradition vibrant and entertaining. And that's not counting the scenic byways.

Here is a tip: If you get hungry on your drive up Highway 78, you might try stopping at Jeremy's on the Hill, a gourmet farm-to-table restaurant in Wynola, just outside of Julian. It is wonderful, and another good reason to make the trip.
