SOHO & Friends Kick Off Gill Celebration
September 2016

SOHO is joining eleven other cultural organizations in San Diego County to celebrate Irving Gill, the architect and his work from September 2016 through March 2017.

Don't miss SOHO's kickoff weekend, which begins with Milford Wayne Donaldson's lecture, Irving Gill: Architect, Poet & Humanist on Friday, September 23 at 5pm at First Church of Christ, Scientist, which Gill designed in 1910 in Bankers Hill. On Saturday, our exhibition, Irving Gill: Progress & Poetry in Architecture, opens at the Marston House Museum. Gill tours will begin in October. Click HERE for SOHO's complete schedule.

Architect James B. Guthrie, organizer of what may be the county's largest ever collaborative project, said he got only enthusiastic agreement when he started asking about a multi-site Gill commemoration, called Irving J. Gill: New Architecture for a Great Country. The project is meant to raise public awareness-here and across the country-of Gill's importance as a pioneering modernist.

In addition to SOHO, other participants occupy Gill-designed buildings, such as the La Jolla Historical Society's Wisteria Cottage, which is presenting renderings by Gill and his assistants; and Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA), which is examining the museum's evolution from civic buildings Gill designed during the 1930s to the renovation and addition by Frederick Fisher & Partners in 2005.

OMA has graciously offered SOHO members free admission to its exhibition Irving J. Gill: A Comfortable Fit. Simply present your membership card between August 20 and October 23.

We hope you'll make the rounds of all the presenting sites during what is for many organizations a sixth-month run because, as Guthrie suggested, "The more you see the more you will learn about this remarkable architect." Guthrie noted, "There are so many ways you can look at Gill, he was a social progressive, a member of the Arts & Crafts movement, a modernist, a great technician, and an innovator."
