Explore Seventh Avenue, Bankers Hill & the Marston Carriage House
July/August 2017
By Bobbie Bagel

The Marston House Museum is temporarily closed for roof and gutter replacement until July 1, but don't stay away entirely! You can still visit the unique museum shop in the estate's historic Arts & Crafts carriage house, 3525 Seventh Avenue, on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm. In addition, the museum's lush lawn and part of its formal gardens remain open for your enjoyment as well.

You can also buy tickets for two lovely SOHO walking tours that begin at the carriage house and illuminate the buildings and landscapes of Irving Gill, one of San Diego's most influential architects, and others. At 12:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays, take the tour called A Progressive Vision: San Diego's Seventh Avenue. As you stroll past the Marston House and along one of the most charming streets in all of San Diego, learn how the talents and foresight of the Marston family, Gill, and nurserywoman-landscape designer Kate Sessions shaped the elegant beauty of this cul-de-sac more than a century ago.

If you prefer a morning outing, the Urban Poetry: Irving Gill & Bankers Hill walking tour leaves at 10:30am on Saturdays and Sundays. Your guide will take you back to the early 20th century as you view some of Gill's most significant early Modernist architecture and handsome Arts & Crafts homes. You'll cross the iconic Spruce Street suspension bridge, a neighborhood treasure that offers great views of the canyon below.

Learn about these legendary residential neighborhoods in the heart of the city and get some healthy exercise and fresh air at the same time! Group tours are also available. For more information and details, click HERE.

Before or after your walking tour, browse the museum shop nestled into the little-changed brick, stucco and redwood carriage house. It is filled with beautiful Arts & Crafts tiles and vases, gifts for home and garden, specially cultivated geraniums named for the Marstons and other local historic figures, art books, history guides, and much more.
