Los Cruzadores to Old Mexico
Saving the Caliente Mural June 18, 2016

Looking a fun, meaningful way to help save the Agua Caliente mural on the California Theatre's back wall in downtown San Diego? Los Cruzadores, a biking group that travels from San Diego to Tijuana, is organizing a cross-border ride on Saturday, June 18 to raise awareness about this endangered 1960s mural and two others. Bike or no bike, please come for a group photo to publicize the latest threats to the mural and the theater building. Meet at 1pm on the sidewalk below the Caliente mural facing Fourth Avenue.

"We're inviting preservationists and the bike community to join us. Come out and share words and stories," Randy Van Vleck of Los Cruzadores, said. "I think aesthetically the mural is beautiful. It's important that we preserve it because it speaks to our transnational identity. So few murals and art pieces represent that."

The riders take off at 2pm and cross the border around 6pm. Then on to old Agua Caliente.

"Let's live out what this mural calls for," Randy said, referring the destination. Co-organizer Randy Armenta designed a cool flier for the ride, which was inspired by the historic mural and includes our logo as a supporter.

The mural's potential historic designation is not supported by the California Theatre's owner, who wants to demolish the building for a high-rise residential tower. The City of San Diego Historical Resources Board is expected to review the matter on June 23. Read more HERE.

"We hope the City will recognize how important this mural is on both sides of the border and save it," Randy said.

Note to riders: The group attracts 20 to 30 riders per trip and welcomes "curious adventurers," Randy said. They keep a "very mellow pace. Moderate riders will be perfectly fine." The 16-mile route to the border is flat and includes stops for rest and refreshment. It's another 4 miles to Agua Caliente. Back at the border, the group will take the trolley back to San Diego.
