Roger That!
By Ann Jarmusch
SOHO congratulates Roger Showley, a third-generation San Diegan, maker of Showley Bros. Candy from family recipes, and prolific San Diego Union-Tribune reporter, on completing 44 years of reporting on local history, historic preservation, and economic and development issues impacting our architectural, cultural and natural heritage. While his retirement was official at the end of March, Roger shows no sign of slowing down-or lightening up.
His thoughtful final column revisits the 1974 landmark study of San Diego, "Temporary Paradise?" (funded by Mary Marston and Hamilton Marston) and bookends one of the first stories he wrote for the paper. Click image to the right to see his 44-year-old report: "Curbs on Canyon Development Urged" and read his recent take HERE.
As proof of his nose for news, Roger had the lead byline on an April 15 history of the newspaper, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. The recipient of numerous journalism awards, including being named SOHO Town Crier in 2002, Roger promises to continue researching and writing about San Diego history and may contribute commentaries to the U-T. Surely he won't disappoint fans who follow his coverage of all things Disney and Harry Potter.
Ever open to discussion and story ideas, affable Roger published his contact info in the paper: phone (619) 787-5714 and rmshowley@yahoo.com. So fire away with any and all urgent preservation issues!

South Park Old House Fair Turns 20!
New Format and a New Date
May/June 2018
SOHO has been a constant at the South Park Old House Fair since its founding 20 years ago. Fittingly, this year the fair is moving to National Preservation Month, and will be held May 19, instead of its traditional June date. The newly reorganized fair will focus on historic preservation, complemented by the popular annual home tour. While marking the fair's 20th anniversary, the community will also be celebrating the long-awaited, recently designated South Park Historic District.
In place of the street fair of past years, a multi-faceted old house exhibition will be held inside the Rose Wine Bar, 2219 30th Street. There, various specialists will give talks and be available throughout the day to guide you and the many homeowners in the new historic district in preserving, restoring, and renovating their old homes.
SOHO and ten other carefully selected exhibitors will be stationed at the Rose Wine Bar. Look for our team of old house experts outside the entrance, next to the home tour ticket booth. We're looking forward to greeting preservation enthusiasts and answering all your questions with proper preservation techniques.
The ticket booth opens at 9am for home tour tickets and the free trolley will make its usual rounds, so you can hop on and off to see the homes at your own pace between 10am and 4pm.
Come celebrate on May 19 with SOHO and the South Park community: 20 years of the Old House Fair and the new South Park Historic District!
