Dreaming of Owning Two Historic Properties
May/June 2018
By Ann Jarmusch

The pristine Miltimore House was built in 1911 for Mrs. Paul Miltimore, a prosperous olive rancher, and has had only three owners. Photo by Cameron Carothers, courtesy Ilana Gafni/Crosby Doe Associates.

Preservationists know that preservation pays. Restored and rehabilitated historic homes are in demand and command higher prices than their ordinary neighbors, especially in historic neighborhoods. To those who argue historic preservation standards and maintenance are an expensive imposition, consider this:

Two significant historic properties in La Jolla and South Pasadena are on the market for $4.35 million and $4 million, respectively.

In La Jolla, three historic homes were moved over time to a compound called Heritage Place La Jolla at 7210 La Jolla Boulevard. Built between 1895 and 1917, all three are designated landmarks with Mills Act agreements. Martha Dunn Corey, La Jolla's first female doctor, lived in the 1909 Victorian bungalow and used it as her office. A newspaper man and a banker owned the others. The three homes include a total of eight bedrooms and 6 1/2 bathrooms within 5,000 square feet of living space on a third-acre lot.

In South Pasadena, the Miltimore House, a 1911 example of architect Irving J. Gill's early modernist designs, is on the market for the first time in 66 years. One of the most important remaining Gill homes, this little-changed cubist design beautifully integrates indoor and outdoor living spaces. The five-bedroom, three-bath house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

See the historically rich Crosby Doe Associates listing. It includes photographs by Marvin Rand and early photographs from the University of California Santa Barbara Irving J. Gill Collection. Read the 1914 House Beautiful magazine article that describes Gill's iridescent wall paint as "Mr. Gill's discovery and secret."
