Ken Kramer Highlights SOHO on KPBS
March/April 2018
By A. Hayes and Jokie Tolentino

Ken Kramer featured SOHO in two recent episodes of his popular KPBS show About San Diego, first with an actual blast from the past. The centennial cannon once lost is now found! This rare artifact from 19th-century San Diego was fired in Old Town San Diego Plaza during the 1876 centennial celebration. After a time in Horton Plaza, it went missing only to turn up as yard "art" that Bruce Coons, SOHO's executive director, recognized as the lost ceremonial cannon. It was restored to working order with a replica carriage by SOHO and Bandy Blacksmith Guild (a 2017 People In Preservation Award winner), and returned to Old Town. Watch HERE.

In his next show, Kramer visited the Santa Ysabel Store. Jokie Tolentino, the store manager and the Santa Ysabel historic sites manager, told him this building is an iconic, 1884 landmark of San Diego's backcountry and that long-time ranchers and neighbors still drop by the store to tell tales from decades past. Kramer ends the episode as the camera focuses on the original letterboxes, feed scale, calendars, and telephone that are reminiscent of the store's past. Best of all, Kramer encourages viewers to stop by for some warmth and good conversation by the wood burning stove. Watch HERE.
