Chicano Park Now a National Historic Landmark
March/April 2017

Sally Jewell, former Secretary of the Interior, knows how to kick off a new year. On January 11, she announced that Chicano Park had become a National Historic Landmark, along with 23 other properties. View press release. San Diegans offer a heartfelt thank you to Secretary Jewell and the Landmarks Committee!

Chicano Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and, shortly after, it was thought to be eligible as a National Historic Landmark under a newly recognized theme, "American Latinos and the Making of the United States." In 2015, an intern from the Latino Heritage Internship Program prepared the landmark nomination based on information provided in the National Register report. SOHO submitted a letter in 2016 to support the nomination, as did Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Councilmember David Alvarez, the California State Historic Preservation Officer Julianne Polanco, members of the Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly, and others. With unanimous support, the Landmarks Committee recommended designation to Secretary Jewell. The committee noted that Chicano Park "is an outstanding representation of the cultural and political legacies of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement and the social history of American Latino/as in their struggle for political and social inclusion." The committee is hopeful that this listing will help bring national recognition to the complex history of Latino heritage in the United States.

San Diego is incredibly fortunate to add yet another significant site to its roster of National Historic Landmarks. See San Diego sites HERE.
