Caliente Racetrack Mural

Caliente Racetrack MuralAdding to the significance of the endangered California Theatre is the iconic 1960s Caliente Racetrack advertising sign painted on its rear wall. Also endangered, it was nearly painted over with a beer advertisement, when City of San Diego staff failed to recognize its pop culture significance in the history of the San Diego and Tijuana Region. It has now been deemed eligible for designation. The good news about the Caliente sign, is that because we nearly lost it, a younger generation, including a new demographic of urban avant-garde artists, rallied to the preservation cause and learned about SOHO.
