Barrett Ranch House

This 1891 two-story Victorian farmhouse in Jamul has been abandoned for years now and is deteriorating as we speak. The wood facades and special architectural elements, such as double front porches and a bay window, are still painted barn-red with white trim, as is the large barn next to the house. It appears vandals have stripped the interior and uninvited guests may have made it their home. The house stands on a 185-acre property once owned by Hal Simpson, a nurseryman from Los Angeles. He opened Simpson's Nursery on 25 of the acres during the 1960s. Once an East County attraction, the nursery closed, leaving the abandoned house even more vulnerable. Who is responsible for the site is still a bit of a mystery.
