Teachers Training Annex #1

Teachers Training Annex #1There is a glimmer of hope for the Teachers Training Annex #1, which is owned by the San Diego Unified School District and stands on city of San Diego property in University Heights. This Italian Renaissance Revival building dates from 1910 and is all that remains of the 1897 San Diego State Normal School campus, the forerunner of San Diego State University. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this handsome building beckons to thousands who pass by its central location, yet the School District is allowing it to deteriorate at an alarming rate. Community activists have proposed transforming this building into a major asset, such as a branch library, but official talks about this opportunity have occurred at a snail's pace. Instead, the School District continues to provide a textbook case of demolition by neglect.
